Adobe to buy Macromedia for $3.4 billion

I just read an article at Macworld.com entitled "Adobe to buy Macromedia for $3.4 billion." The article cites Steven Brazier, an analyst at Canalys Ltd. "The first step will be both vendors supporting each other's formats, and Adobe will likely start integrating Flash into its products."

I like Adobe Photoshop and ImageReady better than Fireworks, but I like Macromedia FreeHand MUCH better than Illustrator. I'm worried about the possible downturn my favorite software will take.

Steve Napierski, creator of the online strip "The Outer Circle" dreads the acquisition similarly:I have mixed feelings about this. Whenever a merger happens, people lose jobs and things change. It's inevitable. You can basically kiss Fireworks good-bye. Who needs it? We have Photoshop and Fireworks lets see...yeah that's what I thought. Then you have Freehand and Illustrator. Personally, I love Illustrator, but there are things from Freehand that would be cool to have added to the program...drawing on perspectives would be one of them. The good news is that Microsoft didn't get their hands on Macromedia. They were trying to do that a year or so back.
