Space.com has updates from this historic mission in an article entitled "First Civilian Astronaut Pilots SpaceShipOne into Suborbit." According to the initial story:
"[T]he privately-built SpaceShipOne departed from an airstrip here at about 9:47 a.m. ET – prepared to trail blaze its way into history by attempting the first non-governmental flight to leave the Earth's atmosphere."
